Instructions for nominators[edit]

If this is your first nomination, please read the DYK rules before continuing. Further information can be found at the supplementary guidelines.

Frequently asked questions[edit]

How do I write an interesting hook?

Successful hooks tend to have several traits. Most importantly, they share a surprising or intriguing fact. They give readers enough context to understand the hook, but leave enough out to make them want to learn more. They are written for a general audience who has no prior knowledge of or interest in the topic area. Lastly, they are concise, and do not attempt to cover multiple facts or present information about the subject beyond what's needed to understand the hook.

When will my nomination be reviewed?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until an editor reviews it. Since editors are encouraged to review the oldest submissions first, it may take several weeks until your submission is reviewed. In the meantime, please consider reviewing another submission (not your own) to help reduce the backlog (see instructions below).

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to this nominations page, it may have been approved and is on the approved nominations page waiting to be promoted. It could also have been added to one of the prep areas, promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Instructions for reviewers[edit]

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets all the DYK criteria (long enough, new enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, suggest new hooks, or even lend a hand and make edits to the article to which the hook applies so that the hook is supported and accurate. For a more detailed discussion of the DYK rules and review process see the supplementary guidelines and the WP:Did you know/Reviewing guide.

To post a comment or review on a DYK nomination, follow the steps outlined below:

  • Look through this page, Template talk:Did you know, to find a nomination you would like to comment on.
  • Click the "Review or comment" link at the top of the nomination. You will be taken to the nomination subpage.
  • The top of the page includes a list of the DYK criteria. Check the article to ensure it meets all the relevant criteria.
  • To indicate the result of the review (i.e., whether the nomination passes, fails, or needs some minor changes), leave a signed comment on the page. Please begin with one of the 5 review symbols that appear at the top of the edit screen, and then indicate all aspects of the article that you have reviewed; your comment should look something like the following:

Article length and age are fine, no copyvio or plagiarism concerns, reliable sources are used. But the hook needs to be shortened.

If you are the first person to comment on the nomination, there will be a line :* <!-- REPLACE THIS LINE TO WRITE FIRST COMMENT, KEEPING  :* --> showing you where you should put the comment.
  • Save the page.
  • After the nomination is approved, a bot will automatically list the nomination page on Template talk:Did you know/Approved.

If there is any problem or concern about a nomination, please consider notifying the nominator by placing on the nominator's talk page.

Advanced procedures[edit]

How to promote an accepted hook[edit]

At-a-glance instructions on how to promote an approved hook to a prep area
Check list for nomination review completeness
  1. Select a hook from the approved nominations page that has one of these ticks at the bottom post: .
  2. Check to make sure basic review requirements were completed.
    • Any outstanding issue following needs to be addressed before promoting.
  3. Check the article history for any substantive changes since it was nominated or reviewed.
  4. Images for the lead slot must be freely licensed. Fair-use images are not permitted. Images loaded on Commons that appear on the Main Page are automatically protected by KrinkleBot.
  5. Hook must be stated in both the article and source (which must be cited at the end of the article sentence where stated).
  6. Hook should make sense grammatically.
  7. Try to vary subject matters within each prep area.
  8. Try to select a funny, quirky or otherwise upbeat hook for the last or bottom hook in the set.
Steps to add a hook to prep
  • In one tab, open the nomination page of the hook you want to promote.
  • In a second tab, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.

Wanna skip all this fuss? Install WP:PSHAW instead! Does most of the heavy lifting for ya :)

  1. For hooks held for specific dates, refer to "Local update times" section on DYK Queue.
    • Completed Prep area number sets will be promoted by an administrator to corresponding Queue number.
  2. Copy and paste the hook into a chosen slot.
    • Make sure there's a space between ... and that, and a ? at the end.
    • Check that there's a bold link to the article.
  3. If it's the lead (first) hook, paste the image where indicated at the top of the template.
  4. Copy and paste ALL the credit information (the DYKmake and DYKnom templates) at the bottom
  5. Check your work in the prep's Preview mode.
    • At the bottom under "Credits", to the right of each article should have the link "View nom subpage" ; if not, a subpage parameter will need to be added to the DYKmake.
  6. Save the Prep page.
Closing the DYK nomination page
  1. At the upper left
    • Change , at the top or bottom.
  4. Save.

For more information, please see T:TDYK#How to promote an accepted hook.

Handy copy sources:

  • To Prep 1
  • To Prep 2
  • To Prep 3
  • To Prep 4
  • To Prep 5
  • To Prep 6
  • To Prep 7

How to remove a rejected hook[edit]

  • Open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to remove. (It's best to wait several days after a reviewer has rejected the hook, just in case someone contests or the article undergoes a large change.)
  • In the window where the DYK nomination subpage is open, replace the line {{DYKsubpage with {{subst:DYKsubpage, and replace |passed= with |passed=no. Then save the page. This has the effect of wrapping up the discussion on the DYK nomination subpage in a blue archive box and stating that the nomination was unsuccessful, as well as adding the nomination to a category for archival purposes.

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue[edit]

  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to this page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from this page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

How to move a nomination subpage to a new name[edit]

  • Don't; it should not ever be necessary, and will break some links which will later need to be repaired. Even if you change the title of the article, you don't need to move the nomination page.

General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

  • Adequate sourcing: No - n
  • Neutral: Yes
  • Free of copyright violations, plagiarism, and close paraphrasing: No - n
  • Other problems: No - The education section is closely paraphrased from the cited source, while the same source is used to support information which it doesn't contain ("Life member of the Council on Foreign Relations", "Head of Security Cooperation Strategy and Policy at the U.S. Marine Corps.") Further issues may be present. The lengthy quote containing the hook fact is not cited and violates WP:LIMITED, in my opinion.

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: No - n
  • Interesting: Yes
  • Other problems: No - As noted above, the hook paragraph isn't cited, and it is only marginally interesting. If possible, a more interesting hook should be suggested.

QPQ: No - Not done
Overall: Significant problems to be fixed, W9793. You have nominated more than five articles, so you will need to start providing QPQs. Please ping me when the problems have been fixed. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 02:26, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Comment only It would be good if you could tidy up the main hook; you are linking to a disambiguation page, and another link is a redirect. Both are not permissible for the main page. Schwede66 23:12, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Long enough, technically not new enough but for want of a few hours I'm not complaining. Both ALTs cited and short enough, though ALT0 is unlikely to be interesting to those unfamiliar with the names and ALT1 is only slightly better. No maintenance templates found, no neutrality issues found, no valid copyright concerns found. What makes ref #12 reliable?--Launchballer 09:49, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Reviewing... New enough, long enough, QPQ provided. Will complete soon, though I think a better hook than being inspired by his mother could be made. Whispyhistory (talk) 12:21, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
... Interesting article bio, no copyvio issues, hook is in the article and verified but not as interesting as the work he has done. The lead is short. I have added some text. Thank you for creating this. Suggest work on some of his achievements and an alternative hook may become apparent. Whispyhistory (talk) 07:20, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Whispyhistory and Z1720: The nominator hasn't edited since the day of the nomination. Given that Whispyhistory has added to the article, would you be willing to adopt this nomination or suggest new hooks yourself? Or should the nomination be closed as abandoned? • ALT2 relies on two citations. The references are two papers, each of which provide citations to Bristow to make claims about the consequences of misunderstanding sickle cell but do not explicitly credit Bristow with contradicting this misinformation in any particular way. I would argue the content of the article might constitute original research in terms of how it utilizes these two sources. Pinging both Whispyhistory as ALT2 creator and 97198 as original nominator. ~ Pbritti (talk) 19:01, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Pbritti: Sorry all for my long absence and thanks Whispyhistory for significantly expanding the article (I've added a credit for you if this ends up running). If there are doubts about the alt hook (which I can't speak to, as I didn't come across this information in the secondary sources I used), I still feel the original hook is plenty interesting enough to be considered. 97198 (talk) 00:05, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Unfortunately, no, I am rejecting the hooks. The original source for this claim says "One of the things that most impressed me in those visits was the realization that many cultures were represented on the staff". The article gets it right that it was visits to his mother at her workplace which served as inspiration, rather than his mother herself. Indeed, the article should read that the visits were an inspiration, because the quote that sources this says this was only "one of the reasons [he] chose the medical profession". Since this hook has suffered repeated setbacks for over a month since it was first reviewed, I am rejecting it. I'm sorry, 97198. ~ Pbritti (talk) 17:37, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ALT3 ... that Lonnie R. Bristow, the first black president of the American Medical Association, noted that the problem with compulsory mass testing of sickle cell disease could lead to the racial status providing grounds to increase insurance premiums? Whispyhistory

  • @Jenny8lee, Edelsmann, and WatkynBassett: This article contains multiple maintenance templates. I will review this when they are resolved.--Launchballer 09:55, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Launchballer: Thank you for taking the time! Yesterday I made an effort to address the various templates and incorporate more reliable sources. I hope that the concerns are now addressed, but to err on the safe side it is probably best to wait a few more days and see if further concerns are raised. If more substantial concerns are raised, I would unfortunately fold this nomination because I personally have no capacity to deal with contention and unnecessary conflict right now. W. C. Renouf

  • I'll review this. QPQ checks out, article length and newness of 5x expansion checks out. I don't see any issues with the article; it's well sourced and generally well put-together. The hook is interesting, but I feel it could be phrased a little more clearly; what about something along the lines of "...British Indian civil servant Winter Renouf advocated for Canadian wheat to be grown in Punjab?" Generalissima (talk) 04:33, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for the review. I chose that wording because he was a Briton in India, not a British Indian. As for the remainder of the hook, in all honesty, I prefer the original which was carefully worded in order to avoid ambiguity. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:39, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As a song related to a contentious topic, we should of course take care to comply with policies and guidelines. I'm unclear on what the tone and possible BLP concerns are and how they disqualify these hooks (presumably per WP:DYKHOOKBLP). Drill music often glorifies violence and there is no undue focus on negative aspects of the living people mentioned. Any clarification would be appreciated. gobonobo + c 16:30, 21 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I really don't think that running hooks talking about calling for the death of Muslim artists, in reference to Hanukkah or Israel, while a major conflict that to put it mildly has proven very controversial, is a good idea. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 22:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for clarifying. I do see where you're coming from. Some might say it wasn't a good idea to write the song in the first place. But the song was written, it became very popular, reliable sources reported on it, and now we have an article for it. I think the article qualifies for DYK in other respects. As far as I know, we have no rule that says we have to censor hooks when there is a major conflict. gobonobo + c 23:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There isn't a rule against hooks about the Israel-Palestine conflict, but understandably such nominations and hooks get much more scrutiny compared to other nominations. In the past, hooks that were seen to be sensational or gratuitous involving the conflict had been modified or declined. The article itself isn't necessarily disqualified from DYK, but the hooks probably need to be changed. At the very least, if either hook was approved and ran on the Main Page, we would likely be getting complaints either at WP:ERRORS or at WT:DYK, which is something that ideally we'd want to avoid. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 00:04, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm confused. The initial comment was prefaced with "not a review but a comment", so I've been waiting for an actual review. I did respond to the concerns about the hooks and asked for clarification as to what policy-based rationale disqualified the hooks. The response was that someone else might hypothetically object to it and we would want to avoid that. I don't see how marking this for closure is warranted. I'd like to request that another editor review this. gobonobo + c 07:36, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Respectfully requesting a fresh review, acknowledging the above conversation. gobonobo + c 07:36, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Gobonobo: To answer your question above, a full review is not necessary to fail a nomination if there are issues that would prevent it from passing. For example, if an article is ineligible due to not meeting length requirements or time-limits (i.e. within seven days of creation/5x expansion/GA promotion), a marking for closure could be done without the other DYK criteria being checked. As for the hooks themselves, they arguably not only are possibly BLP violations, more relevantly they could fall afoul of WP:DYKHOOKSTYLE, specifically: excessively sensational or gratuitous hooks should be rejected. In the past, hooks that were deemed inflammatory to religion were rejected, and there is a reasonable argument that the hooks proposed above are like that to both Jews and Muslims. As such, I would really suggest not going with either hook in this case. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 07:55, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Narutolovehinata5 I didn't actually pose a question there. I see that you suggested not going with either hook because in the past other hooks were rejected that dealt with religion and because, as you say, an argument could be made that they possibly might not comply with DYKHOOKSTYLE. I think it is important to recognize that a topic that is sensational/gratuitous is not the same as a neutral description of that same topic. I don't think we should be rejecting hooks based on hypothetical objections or because someone might complain at WP:ERRORS, but per your advice, I'm providing revised ALTs that don't mention religious holidays or countries. As I'm getting the impression that the "suggestion" of using different hooks is anything but, I'm respectfully requesting again that another editor be allowed to weigh in. gobonobo + c 10:31, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Requesting full review/second opinion. gobonobo + c 10:31, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Huh. Here we go. The article is new, long enough, and comprehensive. I see no copyright issues. It is not easy to gauge neutrality in something like this. Everything seems factual (though for translations from non-English language sources I had to rely on Google Translate) and from what I can see, no aspect of the subject seems to have been neglected. I will say that the proposed hooks are... heavy. At the same time, the cited source, El País, is the strongest of all the sources cited in the article in terms of its reputability. Unlike Narutolovehinata5, I see no potential for BLP concerns in them. WP:DYKHOOKBLP advises against "hooks that unduly focus on negative aspects of living persons", but there is no focus on any aspect of any living people in these hooks. The hooks do not discuss any of the three women nor anything they said or did. Therefore I must dismiss this concern. What I am concerned about is whether it counts as synthesis to associate Billboard with the lyrics, seeing as how the cited sources do not do so. Therefore, ALT1 might be the safer option. I acknowledge that these hooks have a high likelihood of raising eyebrows, but at the same time I feel they are, as far as WP:DYKINT goes, prime DYK material; and I do not see grounds on which I could fail them. Therefore I approve, with preference for ALT1. Surtsicna (talk) 22:41, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have to respectfully disagree that ALT1 is a safe option here. For one thing, there's a bit of an underlying context in that hook. Remember that Dua Lipa and the others are Muslims has Muslim roots, and the hook explicitly says Israeli. All of this while a conflict is going on with... complicated reactions from countries. If this absolutely has to run, I would suggest against any hook that alludes to either Israel or Palestine here. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 22:50, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Dua Lipa does not identify as Muslim. Mia Khalifa was raised Catholic and has never identified as Muslim. As the article explains, they are not named for their (perceived) religious identity but for the stance they have taken. The suggestion to avoid mentioning Israel or Palestine is simply unrealistic. Surtsicna (talk) 23:09, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Still, the context gives me pause and it may be better safe than sorry in this case. We have had issues in the past before of hooks that merely touched on IP getting comments either on WT:DYK or WP:ERRORS, which is what I wished could be avoided here. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 23:19, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, now is the time to scrutinize for errors. If you see any, point them out. I do not see any. Surtsicna (talk) 23:32, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Regardless of the metadata issues (I do agree that we do not need metadata stuff since they're optional), we still need new hooks here. • Comment (not a full re-review): "Hook needs work", as said above. How can a hike carry 14 jerry cans? Hikes do not have arms. They cannot carry cans. And why would a team have included a hike in the participants of their training? Surely they would limit it to team members. More serious than the confusing grammar is the confusing chronology. I don't see the connection between pre-season training and the final game. There is a whole season in between. The pre-season training is relevant to the season itself, obviously, but how is it relevant to this game? —David Eppstein (talk) 06:23, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Comment: @Ktin: I'm making my way through your sources, and the only thing that stands out is the comment about his atheism. Most of the sources say he was raised in a Jewish family. Only one source loosely implies that he became an atheist. The Guardian writes that he was Jewish, but after the "dietary rules were suspended during the war....If you could arbitrarily waive a set of religious rules, thought Marks, why not dispense with religion altogether? He was fast becoming a staunch atheist." I don't doubt any of that is true, but can you at least find one other source that mentions his atheism? Also, it seems odd not to mention his Jewish upbringing but to only mention his atheism. Viriditas (talk) 22:20, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Viriditas: many thanks for the review. Per The Times (accessible via WP:TWL), Devon, the family believe, had a profound effect on him. He returned to London in 1942 to take up a scholarship at Tottenham Grammar School — declaring himself to be an atheist. Later labelling himself as a humanist, he remained vehemently opposed to religion.. Please see if this helps. Alternately, we could delete that sentence. Thanks. Ktin (talk) 23:36, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • That's helpful. I'm an active participant on r/atheism, and as the denizens there are fond of telling me, "not all atheists are humanists", so this is important information that you should add to the article. I would also add the bit about his Jewish upbringing. Viriditas (talk) 23:38, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Viriditas: Please can you help me with the sentence / phrasing that you'd recommend. I am a tad unclear. Ktin (talk) 23:48, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I will leave the phrasing and wording to you. All I’m saying is 1) mention his Jewish family/upbringing; 2) mention he’s an atheist and a humanist. That’s it. Whether he identifies culturally as Jewish isn’t clear to me, but it doesn’t really matter, because you can be culturally Jewish, a humanist, and an atheist. Viriditas (talk) 23:52, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Thank you for modifying the personal life section, but why wouldn’t you put the Jewish upbringing in the early life section where it usually goes? Viriditas (talk) 00:00, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I have made the edits requested. Ktin (talk) 00:01, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Just saw the above message about personal life. Made an update. Please see if that helps. Thanks. Ktin (talk) 00:05, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Tell me, what does the BMJ obituary say about his upbringing? Viriditas (talk) 00:17, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Not sure I follow, please can you be specific. Thanks. Ktin (talk) 00:41, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think it was a pretty specific, unambiguous question. Until you get a copy of BMJ, here’s a copy of his obituary in Diabetic Medicine.[3] Note how his Jewish upbringing is placed in the historical context of his early life without any "opposition to religion" that came later. Try to keep the history and chronology consistent instead of mixing the two together. Viriditas (talk) 00:46, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I personally think it’s an improvement. I will complete a more thorough review in a bit, as I'm out the door at the moment. Of course if someone jumps in before I get back, I don’t mind. Viriditas (talk) 01:11, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Review: WP:DYK200: ALT0 is ~216 char; ALT1 is ~198 char; ALT2 is 178 char; ALT3 is 176 char; Per WP:DYKTRIM, "the ideal length is probably no more than about 150–160 characters". No more. Now, with that said, it is true that some hooks cannot be reduced in length. This is not one of those hooks. I can quite easily bring it down to 80-100 characters or less. Start over. • SailingInABathTub Thank you for writing the article. The article was started and nominated within the time frame and the article is long enough. Some areas of the article come close to WP:CLOP as seen in the text around 29% Earwig matches - but I do not think it gets there. Maybe the "Notable gigs" section should be changed to "Notable performances" because gigs seems colloquial. The history section has many sentences with no citations. Pretty much everything after the fifth paragraph of that section is not cited. The lead is also not sufficient, it is just a list of bands but it should be a lead summary of what the article is about. This is the third nomination so no QPQ is needed. • Article is long enough and was new enough (moved from draft) when nominated. Inline citations look fine, tone is neutral, hook is interesting, QPQ done. Unfortunately, copyvio check flags a significant problem. Fix that, and it's GTG. HouseOfChange (talk) 04:15, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@HouseOfChange: Thank you for your review. The copyvio is a false positive. I took the flagged section from the Orca article. The orca article was copied at some point onto the other website. Thriley (talk) 04:23, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The copied section from the Orca article will need to be 5x expanded per WP:DYKSPLIT; what this means is that the Balcomb article needs expansion, not the specific section of the article. As it runs 1084 prose characters, the article needs to be 5420 prose characters and it's currently 3171. The article will need to be expanded by another 2249 prose characters in order to qualify for DYK. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:16, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Comment: Daniel Case This is not a review, but you're right: as much as your entries look brilliant, promoting this nom so early might prevent us from placing the hook on the date you asked for... There's always the "Special occasion area", though! As a smart alternative option, you could try to improve both the articles about the song and the strike to GA status throughout this month, and then nominate them together for DYK: still, I'd ask @DYK admins: for some advice on whether this would be a good idea or not. Oltrepier (talk) 18:25, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It wouldn't be the first time, if we went that route ... I wound up doing it with Midnight Sun Mosque when my first DYK nom was held to have been untimely, and that was suggested to me as an alternative route (I wanted it to be my 700th DYK, and ultimately it played out that way). I am not sure about the article on the strike, I certainly couldn't do it alone, but maybe help can be sought at the relevant projects (UK, LABOUR). But we do have just enough of a timeframe.

I, too, would be interested in hearing what other people think. Daniel Case (talk) 18:41, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @NegativeMP1:, this is the part of the text I have the biggest issue with:

Alexandra additionally praised more tracks in the game, describing two specific ones, "Collective Consciousness" and "The Hot Wind Blowing", to have similar themes to American soldiers and westward expansion throughout history. Noting both songs to use the word "blindly" to demonstrate their themes, "Collective Consciousness" was believed to focus more on the population, with "The Hot Wind Blowing" focusing on the relationship between the population and the soldiers, with the latter using what was described as a "buffalo image" to invoke similarities between the hunting and near extinction of buffalo and the historical image of "American carelessness".[10]: 32–33

Since I still have no real idea what this is supposed to mean exactly, and the source is offline, would you mind quoting the relevant part of the source for me so I can figure out a possible rephrase? Thanks - Gatoclass (talk) 11:52, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Gatoclass: Fairly big section that is having to be quoted (possibly copyright violating but I don't think so) but here: "Perhaps the greatest condemnations of all are actually removed from ludic interactions or the more overt sections of the script. They are found in the lyrics to two songs: “Collective Consciousness” and “The Hot Wind Blowing”. “The Hot Wind Blowing” is Khamsin’s theme and focuses on the blind obedience of soldiers: * Note that Revengeance was released before the advent of Donald Trump’s nightmarish 2016 presidential bid. [... (lyrics here)...] The buffalo image evokes ideas of wanton destruction and desecration. During westward expansion, thousands of buffalo were killed for their meat and hunted to the point of near extinction. Today, they are a near threatened species but by the turn of the twentieth century, the recorded number of buffalo sat at around three hundred total. The lyrics combine this historical image of American carelessness with ideas of blind obedience. Revengeance goes to great lengths to talk about the complexities that draw people into war when it forces the player to listen to NPC character thoughts and motives during the Denver scenario. However, it also offers a prognostication where soldiers wait for orders, follow them without question, and only try to justify their actions after the fact. The song Collective Unconsciousness plays during the battle with Metal Gear EXCELSUS, focusing more on the general populous. [...lyrics here...] The song makes demands of the public. Obedience to the country entails giving up your mind and swearing allegiance. There’s no questioning anything. The word “blindly” is used again, as it was in “The Hot Wind Blowing”. The lyrics make an equivalency between soldiers and the public. The same thing is demanded of both: ignore the real cost of their happiness, justify the actions that granted it. The public’s solution is to engage in gross product consumption. Combined, the songs create a dark picture and call out the worst aspects of first world behavior." It's from pages 25-26. λ NegativeMP1 17:21, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Intresting article but has some issues when it comes to DYK nomination. In the Death and Legacy section, the last line, which is related to the first hook, is unsourced. Regarding ALT 2, the line in the article mentions of Singh selling sweets and chutneys but does not state if he sold it out of his suitcase as mentioned in ALT2. Hope you can address these issues before the article can be passed for DYK. Toadboy123 (talk) 12:25, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have unpromoted this as the hook fact used (ALT1) was cited in the lead to a website not containing this information. @Winnieswikiworld, Toadboy123, and AirshipJungleman29: please double check; if ALT1 should not be used please strike it so promoters do not accidentally use this. —Kusma (talk) 11:33, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Kusma: Based on your suggestion, I have striked ALT1. - Toadboy123 (talk) 13:05, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Toadboy123: the one you struck was what we usually call ALT0. I see now that the citation here in the nomination supports ALT1, but the citations in the article lead did not, so it should not be too hard to cite the correct sources so the fv tags can be removed and the article can be re-promoted. —Kusma (talk) 16:48, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(edit conflict) I don't quite agree with Kusma, in that ALT1 would need to add "known" after "earliest" to adequately reflect the given source. (I can't access source 4 to see whether it offers more about early Punjabi immigrants as compared to Singh, so I don't think we can go further than that.) I do agree that the the original hook needed to be struck. I'd like to suggest a variant of ALT2 (if "Punjabi Indian" rather than "Indian" is preferred, I'm fine with that):
Kusma, the sentence was adequately sourced in the body. A simpler solution, instead of depromoting the hook, would have been to remove the citations from the lead. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 17:43, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@AirshipJungleman29: Finding citations that fail verification is a major strike against an article for me. Even if the citations are technically redundant. The hook was in the set that was up for promotion, and I am not OK with promoting an article to the main page queue with this kind of flashing warning sign. —Kusma (talk) 18:00, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

QPQ: None required.

Overall: Article moved to mainspace on 27 November but not nominated until 9 December, more than 7 days later. The article is well beyond the required minimum length. Earwig reveals no copyvio, but I have spotted an instance of a sentence being lifted verbatim from a source without being properly enclosed in quotation marks (this seems unintentional, however); I have not ascertained whether this is an isolated occurrence. I don't find the hook interesting. I suppose it technically meets the citation requirement by virtue of the rather lengthy sentence in the WP:LEAD, but it's borderline (and moot since a different hook would be needed anyway). This is the nominator's first nomination, so they are QPQ exempt. Some (non-exhaustive) comments on the content:

  • An issue that immediately stands out to me is that the article is written in a style and tone more reminiscent of a research paper than an encyclopaedia article.
  • The article relies rather heavily on primary literature, rather than secondary or tertiary literature. As WP:MEDRS says: Cite review articles, don't write them.
  • Citing an entire book without providing page numbers is frowned upon, as it makes verification needlessly difficult.
  • (i.e., blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile) to be associated with temperaments (i.e., sanguine, phlegmatic, melancholic, and choleric, respectively) – this mixes up the biles ("melan-", as in melanin, means "black").
  • Austrian neurologists Sigmund Freud – Freud was only a single person, not multiple.
  • In 2010, the name "personality neuroscience" was coined by Colin G. DeYoung – this is cited to DeYoung himself. That's not an appropriate source.
  • who is currently a psychology professor – avoid "currently" and similar phrasings that get dated. See MOS:CURRENT. This occurs quite a few times in the article.
  • As personality neuroscience seeks to understand the link between personality and its underlying neurobiological mechanisms, generating testable hypotheses involve both the measurements of personality attributes and neurobiological structures and/or functions. – unsourced.
  • Detailed description of the Big Five personality traits will be provided under the section "Research findings in Personality Neuroscience" when discussing relevant research findings. – there is no such section (it's "Current research"), and this is not how Wikipedia articles are written.
  • Allport is a leading figure among the proponents of the idiographic approach – whether Allport is a leading figure or not is an assessment that needs to come from the sources. The source cited here is Allport himself, and that's not an appropriate source for this claim. That being said, I doubt that Allport made this assertion in the cited source; it seems more likely to me that this is the editor who wrote the sentence weighing in on the matter—which is not allowed per WP:No original research and WP:Neutral point of view.
  • Personality research that adopted the idiographic approach have demonstrated that the nomothetic approach (e.g., the Big Five) was unable to capture the within-person personality structure. – this goes beyond describing the dispute and well into engaging in it.
  • Specifically, PET neuroimaging scans have been widely used in pre-clinical and clinical settings in relation to epilepsy, dementia, cerebral amyloid, Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injuries. – I don't find mentions of either epilepsy or cerebral amyloid in the cited source.
  • Assay is an analytical measurement procedure defined by a set of reagents that produces a detectable signal, allowing a biological process to be quantified".the source says "An assay is an analytical measurement procedure defined by a set of reagents that produces a detectable signal, allowing a biological process to be quantified.", which differs only by the first word. Based on the stray quotation mark at the end I'm guessing this was meant to be quoted, but as it stands it falls on the wrong side of WP:PLAGIARISM (even if presumably by accident).
  • Personality neuroscience can incorporate neuropsychopharmocological manipulation to establish causal link between personality traits and specific neurochemical processes (e.g., induced manipulation on levels of dopamine). – unsourced.
  • Ongoing effort to collect data from more diverse (i.e., non-WEIRD) sample – "WEIRD" is the kind of jargon that really needs to be explained.

I like it, but that fact alone wasn't directly supported by the article (it just states that the series is called "Hydraulic Press Girl"). The hook I suggested focuses on her acting in commercials, which is mentioned. I've now added that fact to the article and support the alt hook. • This is not a review, just a comment, but as is the special occasion request might not be granted right now as the nomination was started on December 12. February 14, 2024 is beyond the normal six-week limitation for special occasion requests. If there is still a desire to have this hook run on Valentine's Day, an IAR exemption could be requested at WT:DYK, but there is no guarantee that such a request would be granted (though from experience, WT:DYK tends to be somewhat liberal with regards to IAR exemptions as long as there's a good reason). • The target article (Impact of Yuna Kim) is not linked in either of the hooks. If this is a hook about that article, it should be linked and bolded in the proposed hook(s). Aoba47 (talk) 00:03, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Aoba47, that was a silly mistake. I've corrected both hooks. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 05:21, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for the response, and it happens to the best of us. Aoba47 (talk) 16:32, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Passerby comment: the hook article still isn't bolded in the above two hooks, but more generally, I would suggest that those extra wikilinks are distracting from the DYK'd article even if it was bolded. Maybe it's better to just remove the other wikilinks? I would definitely assume many casual readers would click on "Yuna Kim" instead expecting that to be the DYK article. Suggested:
  • I've also shortened these somewhat - I'm of the "short and punchy" school of thought, especially since casual readers may not know what "elements" mean in a figure skating context. SnowFire (talk) 21:04, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Also, if we're being pedantic, I'm not a huge fan of ALT1 / ALT1b - I presume she did have rivals in the sense that she wasn't just skating alone, but rather in competitions. And her competition probably disagrees! If kept, it'd probably be best as an attributed opinion, like "one journalist wrote that her artistry had no rival." But of course, phrasing it like that shows that this claim isn't really THAT impressive. SnowFire (talk) 21:08, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for the assistance with the bolding, too. I like the first hook, but with this feedback, I'd like to withdraw ALT1b and replace it with this:
@Figureskatingfan: Apologies if this is not the right way to do this, but I like this ALT better. I'd suggest framing it as
Yuna Kim had a major impact on KOREAN figure skating and was instrumental in bringing the Olympics to Pyeongchang in 2018?
Because then it'd make her impact unique to this sport (as opposed to all the other skaters who have had major impact on figure skating - Korean figure skating is as big as it is now BECAUSE of Yuna, as has been mentioned in this article repeatedly). Editor120918756 (talk) 07:56, 23 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Editor120918756:, I disagree with your change to ALT2 because as you well know, Kim's influence went far beyond figure skating in Korea. We could say "...a major impact on the sport of figure skating", but that might be too long and redundant. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 19:17, 23 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I prefer ALT2 without that modification, Yuna Kim was significantly influential in more than just Korea. toobigtokale (talk) 14:44, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Maury Markowitz: I'm really struggling with this DYK. There seems to be a huge amount of cross over with the subject discussed at Sprint_(missile) to the point where I'm wondering if this article is superfluous? and other than HAPDAR I'm struggling to confirm in any of the sources provided that confirms the name of the system as Hardpoint. Wondering if you might be able to provide any guidance? Seddon talk 03:36, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Seddon: I can't speak to the Sprint article, I'm not a primary author there. Given this was a completely different project, run by a different organization, built by different companies, with NOTE easily met, I'm not sure there's an issue to correct in this article. The Sprint article also talks about Thunderbird for some reason... the issue would appear to be on that side.
About the second part. If you mean "does the H in HAPDAR mean Hardpoint", then I would point to the IEEE article whose title is "Hardpoint Demonstration Array Radar" and there's any number of independent verifications like this one at MIT. But you mean "I can't verify this thing is called Hardpoint, I only see that in the title of the radar", then there are any number of independent works that verify it to one degree or another, including this one in Daedalus or this mention in the DOD annual report index. It is worth noting that ARPA referred to it both as "hard point" and "hardpoint" in the documents I've found (all linked within), both as the development effort and the overall concept, so it can be very confusing. It's a bit of the "Kleenex" problem.

The article has some text taken straight from this source without acknowledging this (and some of it is mangled in an attempt to avoid the copying, resulting in sentence fragments like " and would have . Ah good catch! I also saw you caught my accidental drafting in the mainspace so thank you catching that as well! I should probably wait till the next day before publishing in the future. Regarding the copyright, my working assumption is that its not PD and so I was taking care to rewrite everything, though not enough and I should have been more careful about copying snippets whilst writing in that process. The author was NASA's Principal Investigator for the experiment but those are roles rather than posts. Whilst its a post that is in some way remunerated by NASA, I think the relationship is more like that of a contractor rather than an employee and so I don't think PD-GOV applies. • Given that no one else has reviewed this, I am taking the initiative to review this. The article is new enough and the nomination was done on the day the article was created. A QPQ has been found and no close paraphrasing was found.
However, I am not happy with the state of the article. It is very incomplete regarding Townsend's life. For one thing, no reference or context is given for his year of birth as well as his date of death. The date of death is only mentioned in the lead but it is not elaborated on in the article. Indeed, nothing about his life between the Panic of 1837 and his death is explained at all in the article. In addition, about half of the article if not over half of it is actually about his family and descendants, rather than about Townsend himself. Considering that the article is supposed to be about Townsend and much of the article is not about him, I do not think the article as it stands passes WP:DYKCOMPLETE.
Finally, as mentioned above, the hook above is not about Townsend himself but one of his descendants. A hook that is only indirectly about the subject is not ideal. The way I see it, I can see two potential paths forward for this nomination to pass: either the article is expanded with more information about Townsend, perhaps also including information that could be used as a hook, or the article could be renamed and its focus be changed to be more about the Townsend family rather than James Townsend himself. If these issues are not addressed then unfortunately the nomination may have to be failed. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 10:44, 6 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you, but the article is still missing a lot about his later life including information about his death. The sourcing issue for the dates of birth and death also remain unaddressed. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:58, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry! I thought I'd added the DOB and DOD refs but it looks like they were caught in draft state. They're now added to the infobox. What information would you like me to add about his later life and death? Chetsford (talk) 04:20, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Anything you can find about his later life. Right now the article seems incomplete. Narutolovehinata5 (talk ·contributions) 04:23, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I solemnly avow that everything discoverable in RS is included in the article, to the best of my ability. Chetsford (talk) 04:28, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If that's the case, then perhaps just include his death in the prose, with a reference. Still, I'm really not sure if it's a good idea that about half of the article is about his descendants rather than him himself. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 04:31, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, that's done. I mean I guess I could delete the section about his descendants and the article would still be over the requisite character count. Chetsford (talk) 04:34, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That wouldn't be necessary, the important think is that the part about his descendants shouldn't be half or over half the length of the article. This can be solved by beefing up the part about James. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 05:08, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, that would definitely be great. Chetsford (talk) 07:22, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • General eligibility:
  • New enough: No - Article was first created on 7 December, as it was nominated on 23 December, it needs to be evaluated against the 14 December version, which had 933 characters. The current article has 2612 characters, and therefore does not meet 5X expansion.
  • Long enough: Yes
  • Other problems: No - Please see WP:PEACOCK regarding the usage of the word heroic in the lead section
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
  • Cited: Yes - Offline/paywalled citation accepted in good faith
  • Interesting: Yes
QPQ: None required.

Overall: Unfortunately, as this fails newness, as interesting as the subject of this article might be, it cannot be considered for DYK at this time. RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 18:01, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@RightCowLeftCoast: As of nomination the article was freshly published, but at this point it's really stale. Also, "heroic virtues" is an official church term. I was debating about whether to add it, but other articles and the list of child saints used "heroic virtues" as a reason for beatification. ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 03:58, 5 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

May I suggest commenting within the the template? This way if others believe that it still meets the newness criteria, they can voice their support (or opposition). That said if Heroic virtues is a term used for determining sainthood, perhaps placing it in quotes, and citing it, as well as linking it (if it has its own article). WP:PEACOCK is more of a MOS thing of WP:GAN, but still it is an applicable critique.--RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 4:19 pm, Today (UTC−8)
@RightCowLeftCoast: Added comments to template as suggested. Didn't know this existed. Thanks! ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 05:24, 6 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The article was moved to mainspace on 23 December, meeting the criteria. Skyshiftertalk 13:48, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Heroic virtue" can't be changed because it's the actual term. Skyshiftertalk 13:51, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Not a review (and I review oldest first so I probably wouldn't touch this any earlier than about late February), but the Metro is listed at WP:RSP as being generally unreliable, and I wouldn't use the Mirror, the Sunday People or the Evening Standard on similar grounds.--Launchballer 01:20, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

DaniloDaysOfOurLives: I still see several instances of the Metro and the Mirror in the article. Can these be replaced or cut please?--Launchballer 15:09, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I thought long and hard about it but I have to keep them in the article. This is because they add to it. The article still passes GNG without them, but the Mirror has a great interview from the actress which is great for the development, and as the Mirror is not deprecated (or considered unreliable in the sources table), I still used it. Regarding Metro, the soaps departments of Metro is separate from the main tabloid site (they even do a weekly Metro Soaps newsletter) and they get their information (e.g. spoilers and interviews) directly from the soaps publicity departments. Some of the information is repeated in Digital Spy and other more reliable sources, but I did not remove all of them from the article as then it would reduce a lot of the information which aids readers and would reduce the reception. There have been other fictional characters articles in recent years that have gotten GA status and DYK despite including Metro sources (including one of mine just a month ago). However, none of the current hooks rely on any Metro or Mirror sources at the moment. DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 00:38, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Moscow Connection: Reping due to a typo. With that said, how do the following hooks sound?
ALT1 ... that 2022 Junior Eurovision winner Lissandro earned the nickname "Elvissandro" due to his love of Elvis Presley?
ALT2 ... that 2022 Junior Eurovision winner Lissandro has done voice-overs for several television series and animation films?

  • Per WP:DYKLEN, the minimum length for an article to be eligible for DYK is 1500 characters. This article only barely scrapes by (1503 using my character counting tool). This count includes the rather substantial number of titles he's held, which accounts for a large proportion of the prose. I would appreciate, if possible, even just one more sentence about him that describes what he was doing at these positions or if anyone expressed thoughts about his performance. If not, we can proceed–the article indeed narrowly clears the bar. ~ Pbritti (talk) 17:49, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Thank you, Pbritti. I have added some more facts (with citation), and according to DYK Check, the article now has 2379 characters. (I had hesitated to add those facts previously, because they are so depressing). Storye book (talk) 16:48, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Storye book: Upon review, I have BLPCRIME concerns about the addition. Earwig came back good, so I say you just need to consider some other addition to the article. However, work has suddenly precluded me from further reviewing. My sincerest apologies for leaving you here. ~ Pbritti (talk) 16:52, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • There was actually nothing wrong with the addition that you are talking about, since no names were mentioned. BLPCRIME refers to individuals whose names are mentioned in the article, but my addition did not mention names. The link in the citation gives only newspaper headlines, which do not contain names. In order to find out those names, you would have to pay a subscription to get beyond the paywall - which is not our concern. However, I have replaced my edit with a general list of typical offences encountered by the sheriff. Our next reviewer will therefore have nothing to worry about. Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Lucy Tun; consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.Reply[reply]

  • For now I am reviewing only Ella and Grae as I do not feel that Tun's individual hook, nor the multi-article hook, are sufficiently interesting to non-specialist audiences. I am noting that three QPQs have been provided, one for each article.
Nieve Ella
The article is new enough and long enough. It is adequately sourced and free from close paraphrasing. I have verified the hook in the source and it is cited inline; although the salon in question was run by her mother, the hook still works especially with the context removed.
Hannah Grae
The article is also newenough and long enough. It is adequately sourced and free from close paraphrasing. I have verified the hook in the source and it is cited inline, and the hook is interesting to a broad audience.
Overall
Ella and Grae are good to go, but I would like to see a new hook for Tun as it seems too specialist to me and isn't as interesting if the reader is unfamiliar with the name of the artist that is mentioned there. Per my comment above I have struck the multihook as lacking sufficient interest to broad audiences. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 11:23, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Nieve-Ella's Hair & Beauty
I'm going to do a little bit more work on Tun's article I think. In the meantime, I've added both an image of Ella and her salon to the article, and I'd like to submit the salon image with the nom.--Launchballer 12:09, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's irritating that Redlightmanagement.com probably isn't reliable, as "that Lucy Tun's inspirations include death metal and RuPaul's Drag Race" could work. I propose:
ALT4: ... that in September 2023, the British musician Lucy Tun co-organised a series of writing camps for East and South East Asian Heritage Month?--Launchballer 14:18, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd say that her agency profile should be okay for noncontentious information, including even hooks. Basically, as long as there's information that they probably didn't make up and isn't something that is likely to be challenged, that source should be okay for certain information. So if you want, you can go ahead with the death metal/Drag Race hook as long as you include Tun's genre to make the contrast more visible. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 23:01, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ALT5: ... that the alt-pop musician Lucy Tun cites death metal and RuPaul's Drag Race as influences?--Launchballer 11:48, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • According to DYKcheck, you started 5x expanding on December 28, 2023. You nominated the article for DYK the day after, so it passes newness in this case.
    • Article is long enough (4601 characters).
    • The current hook you have proposed (ALT0) is not really interesting. I'd recommend that you come up with a new one.
    • The article needs some work, especially in the "Reception" section. It uses the "X said Y" format, which is discouraged. See this essay for ideas.

  • Not a review, and I review oldest first so I probably wouldn't touch this for at least another month and a half (but would not object to any other editor doing so in the interim): The Times of India is not a reliable source.--Launchballer 14:44, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Launchballer Thanks for the note. Times of India is not the only source to support the fact. I have changed it on this nomination to The Indian Express, which is considered reliable. I will rework on the article and try removing TOI resources although the two sources are unlikely to fall under what is considered "unreliable/biased" on this publication, but I take your note. ─ The Aafī (talk) 14:56, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I had added the link to Indian Express piece this nomination, and in the article the fact is also supported by a TheHindu piece. Ioniță Tunsu

  • ... that a street in Bucharest was once named after the outlaw Ioniță Tunsu, because he used to visit his girlfriend there?
Source: Simona Vasilache, "Vintage. D-ale orașului", in România Literară, Issue 33/2015, p. 17: Actuala stradă Ecaterina Teodoroiu se numea, pe la 1850, strada Tunsului, fiindcă iubita celebrului haiduc locuia chiar în casa care înfunda ulicioara. Ioniţă o vizita seară de seară, cu complicitatea discretă a vecinilor, până când un glonte l-a împiedicat să mai vină. ("Around 1850, the present-day Ecaterina Teodoroiu Street was known as Tunsului Street, because that famous hajduk's lover [also readable as 'girlfriend'] lived right in the house at the very end of that narrow alley. Ioniță would visit her evening upon evening [note: this part is incidentally slightly inaccurate, he only showed up in town once per week], with all neighbors acting as his discreet accomplices, until a bullet ended his run.")

("About halfway between Bucharest and Târgoviște, at a place he knew would be used as a resting stop by the general [Kiselyov], [Tunsu] his in the bushes, waiting for him to arrive so that he could get as close a sight of him as possible. [...] Once the general left, Tunsu wrote him a letter with the following words: 'Your Most High Excellency, you imperial man you, you were brought into my country by God, and you can only better this land. Your Excellency's head was today in my rifle's sight. I never thought of killing you, for doing so would have meant killing off a father whom the country adores"). (The quote from the letter continues, and more of it is in the article, but this portion already verifies the hook.)
    • ALT2: ... that according to local tradition, a church bell in brigand Ioniță Tunsu's native area kept ringing out Tunsu's name, until it was stolen by the Wehrmacht?

("Inside the church of Paris hamlet, which was built toward the end of the 18th century, there exists a grave which the villagers assume to be housing the remains of hajduk Ioniță Tunsu. • New enough: Yes
  • Long enough: No - I know the article is technically long enough but it would be great to see if we can get it a little bit bigger before it goes to DYK.

Policy compliance:

Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
QPQ: Done.

Overall: I'd like to see the sourcing issues looked at and also to see if we can expand the article a little bit before I approve. It's a great topic and article so far just needs these issues looking at. Vladimir.copic (talk) 04:08, 16 January 2024 (UTC) Thanks for the review. My notes below.Reply[reply]

Re: Source 1 -- This does appear as wordpress, but, this is an online mirror of the offline magazine Bandwidth Street Press December 2009 issue. I can remove the wordpress link and leave this one as an offline source. But, leaving this wordpress link adds some more to anyone wanting to read the article because Bandwidth Street Press issues are no longer available online.

Re: Source 2 -- Let me do some search for alternate sources. Stay tuned.

Re: Discography -- are both Allmusic and Discogs not permitted? If so, I will do some search for alternate sources. Let me know.

Re: the length of the article, I think what we have now is alright. All information that I could find has been added.

I will follow up regarding the sources. Cheers. Ktin (talk) 04:19, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Vladimir.copic: Source #2 has been replaced in the article. Re: Discogs and Allmusic, those have been removed. I am planning to replace them by this link from Last.fm. Per this Rfc Last.fm is unreliable for biographies and for genres. However, I am linking to direct audio track listing. So, I believe this should be fine. However, if you disagree, I can look for alternate sources. Let me know. With this, I am passing this back to you. Ktin (talk) 04:50, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks! I don't think we can use the sources you have included for the discography. We can be pretty loose with the sourcing for lists of works but that seems a bit too loose. I've tried to do a search myself for sources and if you use the Internet Archive and Google Books you can likely find individual sources for each album. Also, I think you need to give more information in the "Other acts" section like who these acts were. Vladimir.copic (talk) 11:18, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vladimir.copic: -- please can you be specific? Which of the links can not be used for discography? Thanks. Ktin (talk) 01:45, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm referring to Deezer, Apple Music and Spotify. I would not consider these reliable. See this discussion which I think shows some kind of consensus for Spotify at least not being reliable. Vladimir.copic (talk) 04:15, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Valdimir.copic: I think you are misconstruing artist bios and album / track listings. These are two different things. I understand and agree that artist bios are contentious to be read from Spotify. I do not believe we are doing that here. Ktin (talk) 04:56, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Valdimir.copic: I gave this a lot of thought over the last few days. I have now reintroduced the link to the actual albums on Last.fm. I am convinced that the RfC that you referenced is specifically for biographies and artist information that is UGC on the site. My question here Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#Sourcing_Discography did not yield anything different. The link that I have used for discography on the article is an actual link to a webplayer with the albums and songs (where you can actually click and listen to the albums). Unless you find that those albums are UGC or point to a discussion that says that the albums that are posted on Last.fm are UGC, I would want to go with this. Also, it is alright for us to disagree. If you do not feel comfortable proceeding with the review, we can ask for an alternate reviewer. Good day. Ktin (talk) 15:51, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It looks like we've reached an impasse. I am not comfortable with the sourcing of the Discography section. Please see this discussion regarding the use of LastFM, Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. I'm seeking another reviewer to look at this. Other than the discography the article is great, and, this disagreement aside, the nominator has done a good job. • Yeah, that's fine Leijurv, however, the hook says it is "one of the last" such hospitals and the article says it is the last, period, which is it? Gatoclass (talk) 13:40, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Gatoclass: The exact phrase in the source is is believed to be the country’s last big almshouse. I'm of course willing to rephrase either/both. From all my research, I think it is the last. However, that depends on how you define "large" or "big". So I hedged it by saying "one of the last". I believe that the hook as written is supported by the source. Leijurv (talk) 19:54, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Leijurv:, now I'm more confused, because "last big almshouse" is not the same thing as "last remaining large non-profit publicly funded long-term care facility". How did you derive the latter from the former exactly? Gatoclass (talk) 12:05, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Gatoclass: I apologize, I was trying to abbreviate and save time, but I can clearly see that I was being silly and I've actually wasted your time. Sorry. I cut off the whole paragraph from this source, which reads: Laguna Honda, which opened 156 years ago, is believed to be the country’s last big almshouse, a nonprofit nursing home run by the county to provide long-term medical care for the very poor, the very sick and the very disabled. Unlike most hospitals that aspire to move patients out as quickly as possible, Laguna Honda operates slowly and with great care. This is where all of those qualifiers of "large", "non-profit", "long-term", "care facility" (from "nursing home to provide care"), and "publicly funded" from it being ran by the county, and other sources confirm this too such as this one which says Medi-Cal is the big one, accounting for most of the nursing home’s funding, and at least 95% of Laguna Honda’s 500 frail residents rely on it. Medi-Cal is California’s version of Medicaid. Leijurv (talk) 05:11, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hook eligibility:

QPQ: No - ?
Overall: The article is well sourced and neutral, I don't see any copyvio. The only nitpick I would have is that his death should be mentioned in the body of the article somewhere with a citation. Also, hooks about "firsts" aren't always everyone's favorite choice. Can we rephrase or find a different hook? Something about him stepping away from lawyering and helping to establish the online food writing community after his father died could work. Lovely little article User:P199. First hook okay, but not super interesting. Unconvinced of sourcing for the second. New article of sufficient length, QPQ has been done, image licensing okay, and the source supports the statement. However, the source was published in 1980, and I'm not sure if the park still has this simple vegetation pattern and even-aged trees. There have been a lot of wildfires in recent years in Canada, and if a part of the park burned again, that would result in a mix of tree ages. Either rewrite with a more recent source, or shorten (and give context in the article). Shorter hooks are often more interesting. What about:

The WP:DYKRR is clear "use common sense here, and avoid even the appearance of conflict of interest." you edited this article and other articles in the WP:CTOP area. The original hook gives only prominence of South Africa POV so there is nothing neutral in it --Shrike (talk) 11:09, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've had people edit an article of mine before and edit in the topic area in question and still approve my nomination. It's not really that bit of a deal, so long as they are properly going through the requirements of approval. By the way, your proposed ALT is way more biased than the original hook and, considering you publicly state on your account that you are from Israel, you're the one that looks like they have a conflict of interest here and really should not be proposing such a hook. SilverserenC 16:25, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ALT1 is grammatically incorrect. starship.paint (RUN) 12:18, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oppose original formulation and ALT1. The original proposal throws in the apartheid allegation, which is out of scope of the Genocide Convention and will not be adjudicated by the ICJ. ALT1 also cites an emotive and non-substantive "blood libel" rebuttal rather than the actual reasons that Israel denied the charges at the ICJ, namely that they are acting in self-defense and that the official directives of the authorities conducting the war do not show any genocidal intent. ALT3 seems to be best alternative, as it is a NPOV statement of fact that gets at the heart of the issue that the ICJ has been asked to rule on (in the short term). --Chefallen (talk) 17:12, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

ALT2: ... that during South Africa's genocide case against Israel, the Israeli legal team argued that the International Court of Justice had no jurisdiction over the war in Gaza? Source: Haaretz starship.paint (RUN) 12:40, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Seems to me as a good suggestion though in my opinion the article is not stable yet Shrike (talk) 13:47, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Starship.paint: no objection in principle, and the proposed hook is entirely factual. My concern is that the statement leads a reader to assume that by jurisdiction we mean something it doesn’t mean. Shaw’s argument on the topic of jurisdiction was: (1) a procedural question about whether SA had given Israel enough time to discuss ahead of the case, and (2) whether there really is enough evidence to confirm the proposed facts of the case and the intent required therein. Plus none of this technical argument is currently explained in the article. Onceinawhile (talk) 15:28, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you, I'll have to look into this once I am free. I think we have time as the article will stabilize in the meantime. starship.paint (RUN) 23:06, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You're right Onceinawhile, I found a source giving a description that roughly matches (1), whether there was an actual dispute between South Africa and Israel regarding their responses to each other. In that case ALT2 is potentially misleading. I've withdrawn it in the meantime. starship.paint (RUN) 06:06, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

ALT3: ... that South Africa's genocide case against Israel is aimed at persuading the International Court of Justice to order a ceasefire in Israel's war in Gaza? Source: Haaretz starship.paint (RUN) 09:44, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Support this version. NPOV statement of fact that gets at the heart of the issue that the ICJ has been asked to rule on, unlike original and ALT1. --Chefallen (talk) 17:15, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Unknown
  • Interesting: Unknown
  • Other problems: No - The source provided does not explicitly identify the man in the photo as Mutch McKay's husband, which is a bit of a concern for me (it treads just a bit into WP:SYNTH territory in my eyes with the one provided). The source does not even mention the individual by name, nor does she get mentioned in the article either.
QPQ: Done.

Overall: Looking further, the article that does mention that is the Jan 7th Stuff article. I feel like there could be some potential improvement with the hook too, since I feel like a hook that simply discusses Mutch McKay's husband (potentially diminishing her) could be a bit of a wasted potential considering her body of work. It doesn't entirely draw one in to clicking the article. Potentially an alternative hook that could be provided that discusses her body of work is possible, though I am open for discussion, but at the moment I have some unease with the hook. Ornithoptera (talk) 05:46, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I feel as if with a DYK it doesn't matter too much whether it is about her or her husband. I do think that including her husband would make a much more interesting hook, but I agree with your sentiment. Here's ALT1:

  • A quick comment on the hook: While it's taken directly from the source, I don't think the orchestra pit wording is accurate. From what I've seen, the area that fills with water isn't an actual orchestra pit, but a shallow purpose-built structure in front of the stage, where an orchestra pit would usually be in regular theatres. The Straits Times writer probably used the term as a loose description, for brevity. Unfortunately it's rather misleading, as it makes the reader think of a swimming-pool-sized body of water (which would be impossible to fill within seconds) rather than a recess in the floor just a few centimetres deep. --Paul_012 (talk) 16:42, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Apart from the above, article is new, more than long enough, and with no major outstanding issues. (Though it could certainly benefit from some heavy copyediting; there's a lot of proseline paragraphs consisting of individual sentences strung together, each reporting on a fact from one source. Not that it affects DYK eligibility.) QPQ provided. Only needs additional work on the hook. --Paul_012 (talk) 18:32, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Overall: Perhaps hook could be more intriguing with some when and a tiny bit more what (without totally giving the game away), e.g. "In 1952, Tove Jansson accepted a lucrative offer from a British newspaper man?" Zeromonk (talk) 09:44, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • ALT1: "In 1952, Tove Jansson accepted a lucrative offer from a British newspaper man?"
  • The hook/alt are misleading and set an absurd precedent: you can remove relevant info from all hooks, make them look more mysterious than they are, and draw clicks with that method, doing absolutely no service to the topic itself. The bland info here is that she accepted an offer to draw the comics in English papers as well (well, it's actually not that bland, it would be somewhat interesting on itself); the pointlessly vague phrasing here makes it seem like the offer was from James Humphreys. Is the subject here really so obscure that there's nothing else to fish from the article, and that we have to resort to this sort of trickery? Dahn (talk) 17:56, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • I'm very sorry you feel that way, and the old-style hook is certainly not a "precedent": it was for many years the Wikipedia DYK tradition to make hooks somewhat entertaining and ambiguous; indeed, short witty hooks were considered the best. If times have changed and we have to be straight-faced and literal now, that's fine (maybe other reviewers will be happy with it, I don't know; the reviewer above was), but there is no reason to become angry about it. Anyway, here's another in case we choose not to go with one of the hooks above. Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:38, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • It's not about being straight-faced and literal, it's about not relying on nonsensical deception to make the article seem more interesting (this is especially weird here, where the article seems reasonably interesting). Dahn (talk) 18:59, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • ALT3: ... that Tove Jansson (pictured) had an "unusually even balance between visual art and writing"?Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20110807230113/http://www.kansallisbiografia.fi/english/?id=1395
    • Alt 2 has some modicum of interest only if one already knows who Jansson was, and that she drew mainly for children. ALT 3 is a bland statement that rhymes with just about any author who also drew. How about how she made a political figure that she she dated into Snufkin? how about her Moomintroll was originally used in her political cartoons? how about the psychological clues about her family and how they seeped into her illustrations? Seriously, you're acting like this is an obscure bland figure on whom nothing interesting can be found, and in fact she was a trove of beautiful quirks. Dahn (talk) 18:59, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • I've suggested two witty and two plain hooks. If you want to propose others, please list and cite them as ALT4, etc. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:01, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Not a review, and I review oldest first so I probably wouldn't get to this much before late February (but would not object to any other editor reviewing this in the meantime); WP:NYPOST is not a reliable source, so if you wanted that hook, you would need to find a better source.--Launchballer 08:51, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Thanks @Launchballer. I also was thinking that in the back of my mind about the NY Post thing, and had to use it as it was the only primary source of the actor being interviewed saying so, unfortunately. I'll address the issue, and have opted to replace the primary hook with a new one, as shown above. Thank you for notifying me. -Dcdiehardfan (talk) 00:12, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Usual practice is to strike and propose new hooks as opposed to replacing them (since otherwise my comment doesn't make sense). The problem you have is that the NY Post is sufficiently unreliable that we don't trust them to not make it up, so we can't be sure that that interview did in fact happen. Thank you for the extra hook - full review needed.--Launchballer 11:30, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Apologies for the error. I understand the NY Post error, so hopefully that should be fixed. With that being said, I plan on making ALT3 the prime hook. I look forward to the review, thank you. -Dcdiehardfan (talk) 04:58, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have a firm policy of doing my QPQs oldest first, as that's fair. I may revisit this if WT:DYK#Backlogs carries out its threat to time out nominations, but for now, please be patient. • @Generalissima: Newly expanded, interesting, no plagiarism, QPQ done. I think the article has a rather significant problem in its manner of using the sources, especially Jones (used as a source for the hook). For one, the citation for the hook comes loooong after the fact itself (some four phrases after, at the end of a paragraph). All citations to Jones are made to the entire article, 20-pages long, which is against various chapters of the Manual of Style, and which are pretty much faux citations. This explicitly contradicts DYK rules, which state that the fact for the hook has to be immediately cited (I wouldn't bother if it were after a phrase, or even two, but this is excessive); but more so, it is a very poor and lazy standard of writing, overall, since it is impossible to tell which page has which info, and makes it very hard on any other editor to introduce new info, should this appear in some other paper. (Furthermore, it seems quite implausible, or at least extraordinary, that Rowley and Jones would be usable sources for every single fact in a paragraph where they are both cited only at the end.) Please find a citation system that agrees with you, with footnotes for each fact picked out from Jones or whatever other source, then redo the referencing on the article; otherwise, this can't be used on the Main Page. Dahn (talk) 21:12, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • @Dahn: When nominating this, I used SFNs, but these have been repeatedly removed by another editor. I have no idea how to pursue in this situation. Generalissima (talk) 21:19, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • @Generalissima: Sorry for not noticing the kerfuffle. I think Nikkimaria should be reverted with what are, quite frankly, disruptive edits. I just don't know which version should be reverted to. Dahn (talk) 21:22, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
        • Hi @Dahn and Generalissima: CITEVAR is quite clear that users wishing to change a citation style established in an article are required to obtain consensus to do that first, which has not happened yet in the current talkpage discussion. Unfortunately in the absence of that, it is the conversions which are disruptive. Please stop doing that unless/until a consensus is reached. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:17, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
          • What is disruptive is the attempt to prevent the article from moving along to an objectively better standard. The citation standard you say was used before (I won't even check, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt) was inoperable for sources which are 20-pages long, as is the case with the one used to source this hook. The objection makes no sense at all. Dahn (talk) 06:10, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • It appears a compromise was reached, and I thank both parties. @Generalissima: I would still appreciate it if you could break down the citations used just once per paragraph into citations closer to the fact that they each verify; they can even be duplicate, as long as it is clear which info belongs to which source, and on which page it can be found. This includes the hook fact, but may also be applied to other portions of the article where the reference comes at the end of the paragraph. Dahn (talk) 06:37, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Oppose ALT1 or any hook describing the 1948 national championship as "consensus". Cited article states "first outright national championship since 1948" but ALT1 hook changes this to "...consensus...". On the topic of national championships, "consensus" has several meanings. One is agreement between the two wire service polls (AP Poll and Coaches Poll), which the 1997 title fails (AP only). But the 1948 title didn't have agreement between those polls either... the Coaches Poll started in 1950. Another meaning of "consensus", the one used in the NCAA records book, is any national championship after 1950 awarded by one or more of the Big 4 selectors (AP Trophy, Coaches' Trophy, Grantland Rice Award, and MacArthur Bowl). The 1997 title meets that criteria with 3/4 of the selectors; the 1948 title does not (as it is pre-1950). PK-WIKI (talk) 03:20, 12 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • ... that black-billed magpies (pictured) are known to eat ticks off of deer and other large mammals? Source: Black-billed Magpies (Pica pica) were observed pecking on fallow deer (Dama dama) on 56 occasions. Ectoparasite removal was apparently the reason for this interaction. Birds preferred deer that were sitting to deer that were standing, and interacted preferentially with adult males over females or calves. Deer did not solicit cleaning and, on a few occasions, were observed to shake off birds. This interaction may be beneficial for magpies, because ectoparasites are a predictable source of food, but its effect on fallow deer remains to be investigated. https://academic.oup.com/condor/article/100/1/177/5126669?login=false

  • ... that although ShinMaywa Industries never participated in the Apollo 11 mission, they built a tomb in the sacred site of Okunoin with a large-scale model of the rocket (pictured)? Source: [46] "Perhaps the most gawked at monument is the model of Apollo 11 erected in 1970, the year after the successful moon landing, by Shinmaywa Industries, which had nothing to do with the American spacecraft.
"Apollo 11 was a big event, and our firm had a lot to do with flying objects," a company official said. "It was also thought Apollo would become a good tool for improving the firm's image." But, he said, the company was criticized for building such a garish monument in a holy place."
    • ALT1: ... that the hall of worship of Okunoin, a sacred site on Mount Kōya, Japan, holds more than 10,000 perpetually lit lanterns (pictured), some of which have been burning for more than 900 years? Source: [47] "At the end of the cemetery path was Torondo, the Lantern Hall, used as a gateway to Kūkai’s mausoleum and where 10,000 donated lanterns hang. Two of these lanterns have been burning continuously since 1088AD, one from a former emperor and the other from a peasant woman who sold her hair for a lantern to pray for her deceased parents. The hall was about to close just before we arrived, so we quickly slipped inside to admire its ornate woodwork and hand-carved lanterns while the sun began to sink and darkness once again settled around us."
    • ALT2: ... that the cemetery of Okunoin in Japan (pictured) contains more than 200,000 graves, many of them belonging to monks and daimyo? Source: [48] "across the lichen- and moss-covered graves of 200,000 Buddhist monks, feudal lords and military commanders fanning out from the seemingly ancient stone paths."

Special occasion holding area[edit]

The holding area is near the top of the Approved page. Please only place approved templates there; do not place them below.

Do not nominate articles in this section—nominate all articles in the nominations section above, under the date on which the article was created or moved to mainspace, or the expansion began; indicate in the nomination any request for a specially timed appearance on the main page.
Note: Articles intended to be held for special occasion dates should be nominated within seven days of creation, start of expansion, or promotion to Good Article status. The nomination should be made at least one week prior to the occasion date, to allow time for reviews and promotions through the prep and queue sets, but not more than six weeks in advance. The proposed occasion must be deemed sufficiently special by reviewers. The timeline limitations, including the six week maximum, may be waived by consensus, if a request is made at WT:DYK, but requests are not always successful. Discussion clarifying the hold criteria can be found here: [55]; discussion setting the six week limit can be found here: [56].
April Fools' Day hooks are exempted from the timeline limit; see Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know.
