Main Page error reports

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 10:21 on 22 January 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in "On this day"

Today's OTD

  • "1924 – Ramsay MacDonald took office as the first prime minister of the United Kingdom from the Labour Party." He wasn't the first Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Suggest re-wording as "the first Labour Party prime minister of the United Kingdom". DuncanHill (talk) 00:35, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I prefer the wording in the OTD set. "Labour Party prime minister" might suggest that there was a position within the Labour Party organisation called prime minister, which was first occupied by MacDonald. Z1720 (talk) 00:53, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I agree with Z1720 about the downside of the proposed rewording. I'd be open to a different proposed rewording, though I don't think it's essential. One possibility could be "... became the first Labour Party member to take office as prime minister of the United Kingdom", although that's a little more wordy than the current hook. Newyorkbrad (talk) 00:57, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Putting "from the Labour Party" at the end is a clear indication that this is part of the criterion, unlike if we had "Ramsay MacDonald, from the Labour Party, took office as". Another reason why "Labour Party prime minister" is not as satisfactory is because we wouldn't be able to link both articles without contravening MOS:EGG. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 02:11, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So pretty > accurate. The hook as it stands is just horrible English. How about adding "to be" between "Kingdom" and "the"? Still horrible, but at least less unclear. DuncanHill (talk) 02:43, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would be OK with DuncanHill's solution (if they mean between "Kingdom" and "from"). Z1720 (talk) 03:14, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree it's a mess. I thought Ramsay MacDonald was a Labour party politician, but am being told he took office after the Labour party lost an election. Or is it he is the first ever prime minister and a Labour party politician.
* 1924Ramsay MacDonald became the first Labour Party member to be appointed prime minister of the United Kingdom. (Same number of words. Also makes the point that the office of PM is not filled by election in the UK.) Bazza (talk) 10:21, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
